Setting Up A Home Office That Will Work For You
If you have landed a job that allows you to work from home or you are starting your own home based business, you will need to set up a home office.
Think about unused space in your home that could be converted into an office. Do you have an unused bedroom, space in your basement or attic or even a detached garage that you could use? If you choose a space that may not be heated, such as the attic or garage, research home space heaters as a heat source. There are many kinds as well as price ranges available and you may be able to find one to suit your needs.
You will need to decide how you will furnish your office. You may not need a lot of elaborate furniture, but you are probably going to have to have some basics, such as a computer desk. You are probably going to have to have some kind of storage for your paperwork and files. If you do not have drawer space in your desk, make a trip to an office supply store. There you should find a home office storage option that will work for you.
If you are working full-time, you will spend a majority of your day in your office, so you will want it to be comfortable. Hang some art work on your walls and maybe add a plant or two. Do you like to listen to music when you work? Consider a radio or CD player.
You will also need plenty of lighting. If you need a lamp on your desk and don’t have one around the house that isn’t being used, visit your local retail or home improvement store. You will find not only lighting options, put other home decor accents that you could use in your office to give it a personal feel.
One of the biggest issues that home workers have to deal with is distractions. During the time you are working, you will need to ignore your pile of laundry, the dishes in the dishwasher that need unloading and other household chores. If you are on the telephone a great deal, you will also need to keep noisy children or barking dogs away from your office.
Set some ground rules with your family. Make it clear that when you are working, you are not to be disturbed unless it is an emergency. Ideally, your office space will have a door that you can close when you are working to shut out distractions.
Working at home can save you a lot of money on things such as gas, wear and tear on your vehicle and clothing. It does take a great amount of self discipline to be successful, but you may very well find that the benefits far outweigh the negatives.
