There’s never been a better time to start a home-based business. The recession, with all the layoffs and pay-cuts has caused many people to re-think how they earn the bulk of their income. Families have had to tighten their budgets and in response, many moms are beginning to enter the world of small business by starting home-based companies that help them to take control over their family’s financial future.
The effects and aftermath of all the corporate downsizing haven’t been the only impetus for moms to decide that home business is the way to go. Inspired by the many so-called mom-preneurs that are making financial successes of their hobbies and home-making skills, women have been deciding to focus more on what fuels them emotionally and they’ve begun to attend seminars and buy thousands of dollars worth of books, CD’s and other products that help them to identify the best route to leaving a corporate paycheck and doing more personally satisfying work as small business owners and entrepreneurs.
The kinds of businesses that stay-at-home and corporate moms are starting are quite varied. Most choose businesses that have something to do with an interest or particular skill that they have, rather than just randomly jumping on the bandwagon of other women who have started things like Avon or Tupperware.
One popular home-business choice for stay at home moms is direct selling. The kinds of products they sell range from cleaning supplies, cosmetics, fashion jewelry wholesale or more unique items such as adult toys and books.
A lot of moms also choose to start a blog. Mom bloggers, as they are often called, earn money by selling much coveted advertising space on their blogs. The can also make money by selling products from which they will get a percentage of each sale.
Blogging has become a fun and entertaining outlet for many moms who use the blog as a way not just to make money but to share stories about the many challenges of raising kids, balancing a budget and ways to stay on top of time management. Once a blog gets a large readership, many bloggers are finding it useful and profitable to create ebooks. Most of the ebooks are how-to guides on a wide variety of topics that have usually grown out of the conversation that the blogger has had over time with their readership. The hope is that their blog followers will become their ebook readers and of course, eventually their customers.
